Israel | God’s Timepiece for the Last Days
You may have heard that Israel is God’s timepiece for the last days, but where does this saying come from, and is it accurate? How could a country itself actually be an identifier of time, or possibly show how much time might remain until a yet future event? To better understand this concept, we’re going to look at some prophecies surrounding the regathering of the Jewish people to their homeland, and the restoration of their land, to better understand where we are in God’s prophetic timeline for man.The Rebirth of Israel (1948)
The restoration of Israel officially began on May 14, 1948, when the Jewish people were reborn as a nation, in a single day, after being scattered and exiled from their land, nearly 2,000 years ago. Outside of the resurrection of Christ, this is literally the 2nd biggest prophecy in the entire Bible to ever be fulfilled, as no other nation on earth has ever come back to become a nation in their homeland again after being destroyed. As the world has stood by and watched the physical rebirth of Israel, the restoration of their original Hebrew language (also prophesied), and their transition into a powerful and mighty nation today, in these last days, we are literally witnessing the awesome power of God at work and is a testament to the accuracy and authenticity of Bible prophecy.A Brief History on Why the Jewish People Were Scattered
As the Jews are “God’s chosen people,” you may be wondering why God would even allow His people to be killed, scattered and exiled from their homeland in the first place. The answer is simple. While the Jews were in their land, they were sinful, rebellious and foolish towards God. They defiled the land with their idols, and they kept doing it, repeatedly, so God judged them according to their actions. We see this in the following passage of Ezekiel 36.Ezekiel 36:18-19
18 So I poured out my wrath on them because they had shed blood in My land, and because they had defiled it with their idols. 19 I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions.As the Jews had now been scattered, and many taken into slavery by the Romans after the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD, the time clock for Israel was now paused. For those familiar with their Bible, this pause in time is the segment between the 69th and 70th week of Daniel. During this time, God turned His focus back to the gentiles (ie non-Jewish people) of the earth to begin building His Church. This period of time, or “dispensation” that we are currently in, is known as the “Church Age” or the “Age of Grace,” and will end with the rapture of the church when the "fullness of the gentiles" has come in.
God Regathered the Jewish People to Their Homeland (as Prophesied)
As we have now given context as to why the Jewish people were scattered from their homeland, and when this occurred in time, let’s now look at some of the many prophecies in the Bible that mention God regathering His people to their homeland, as well as the restoration of the land, once they are back in it.Ezekiel 36:24-25, 28
24 For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 28 Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.”Jeremiah 30:3
3 For behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD, ‘that I will bring back from captivity my people Israel and Judah,’ says the LORD. ‘And I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.’ ”God Restored the Land of Israel Once the Jews Were Back in It (as Prophesied)
God also tells us that once His people are back in their land, that they would build cities out of the waste lands, plant vineyards and drink the wine, plant gardens and eat the fruit, and will never be uprooted form their land again. Today, Israel is a major exporter of fruits and vegetables in the Middle East and now produces over 40 million bottles of wine annually.Amos 9:14-15
14 I will bring back the captives of My people Israel;They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them;
They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them;
They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them.
15 I will plant them in their land,
And no longer shall they be pulled up
From the land I have given them,”
Says the LORD your God.
Note: During Mark Twain’s 1867 journey through Israel and the Holy Land, documented in his book called the “The Innocents Abroad,” he described the land of Israel as being “a desolate, hopeless, dreary, heart-broken land” and the city of Jerusalem as “having become a pauper village and lost all its ancient grandeur.” Today, we clearly see the fulfillment of God’s word and the blessing upon His people as Israel is a thriving country of roughly 10 million people, has one of the most advanced militaries in the world, has an annual GDP of $700+ billion dollars and Tel Aviv is now one of the largest and most advanced technology and financial centers in the entire Middle East.
The Rebirth of Israel Began the 'Fig Tree' Generation
In Luke Chapter 21, Jesus gives the parable of a fig tree to his disciples. He states that when a fig tree is budding, you know that summer is near. He then says “likewise, when you see these things happening,” referring to the signs of the end of the age that He had just spoken of to His disciples, they would know that the Kingdom of God is near. The signs mentioned were increasing deception, wars and rumors of wars, nation rising against nation, increasing earthquakes, increasing volcanic eruptions, increasing lawlessness, increasing hatred of the Jewish people, pestilences, etc... Christ then mentioned that the generation that sees these things happening “will by no means pass away,” meaning they will not experience a physical death (as they will be raptured).Luke 21:29-32
29 Then He spoke to them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place.Many biblical scholars connect this passage to the rebirth of Israel in 1948 as the “budding of the fig tree” and the length of a generation as being 70 years, or stretched to 80 due to strength, as we are told in Psalms 90:10. As Israel was reborn in 1948, if you add 70 – 80 years, you get 2018 – 2028 respectively. As Israel is now 78 years old in 2026, we know that time is short as we are getting very close to the end of the 80 year generation, while simultaneously seeing all the last days signs we were told to look for, all taking place and converging simultaneously.
Jerusalem Will Become a Burdensome Stone in the Last Days
As another sign to help us understand where we are on God’s prophetic timeline, we are told that once Israel is restored back in their land, in the latter days, that the city of Jerusalem itself would become a burdensome stone, or a stumbling block, to all people of the world. This is currently happening now and was prophesied in the book Zechariah, roughly 2,500 years ago.Zechariah 12:3
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.As of Sept 2026, 157 of the 193 United Nations member states, representing 81.3% of all nations, have now openly declared their support for a Palestinian State and seek to create a two-state solution by splitting Jerusalem in half. West Jerusalem would be the capital of Israel and East Jerusalem would be the capital of the new state of Palestine. The following map (from Wikipedia) visually shows in green all the nations that are currently against Israel and support dividing Israel’s land in order to create a Palestinian State via the two state solution. The BIG problem with dividing Jerusalem is that it is God’s holy city, which He calls His “treasured possession” (Psalm 135:4) and the “apple of His eye” (Zechariah 2:8). This is why God stated that He will “cut into pieces” anyone who tries to divide His land.

Israel is Preparing for Their 3rd Temple
Another clear sign that time is very short (before the rapture of the church) is that Israel is making great strides towards building their 3rd temple. The Temple Institute in Jerusalem, the Jewish organization in charge of the building 3rd Temple, openly states that they now have everything ready to build it, and are fully ready to conduct temple worship services, once given the green light to do so.Although the Bible doesn’t state exactly when it’s built, we know from Daniel 9:27 that in the middle of the week, referring to Daniel’s 70th week, which is a 7-year period of time in which God focuses his attention back on Israel and the Jewish people, the man of sin, called the Anti-Christ, will bring an end to sacrifice and offering in the 3rd temple when he performs an abominable act, by declaring himself to be God, and it will then become desolate (ie deserted). Most Christians today feel that Israel will likely receive approval to build their 3rd temple as part of the coming 7 year peace agreement that the Anti-Christ confirms between Israel and their neighboring Muslim countries.
The World is Focused on Israel & the Middle East
Since the attack on Israel back on Oct 7, 2023, just over three years ago, the world’s attention has been focused on Israel and the Middle East, especially as oil prices are surging globally. In addition to Iran and their proxy terror groups continually launching missiles and drones into Israel, they are now attacking oil tankers and restricting access to critical Straits in the region, and this is greatly restricting the flow of oil and valuable fertilizers which the world needs to grow its food.So how do all these actions correlate to a time clock for the last days? Simply stated, normal is running out by the day as we are witnessing the shadows of the coming 7 year tribulation being cast, in terms of the coming global famine, extreme inflation, economic collapse, etc.. that will take place at the onset of the Tribulation when the first four seals of Revelation Chapter 6 are opened (ie. when the four horsemen ride). Believers will already have been raptured out before these things take place as they are not condemned to the wrath of God (Rom 5:9) and will be kept from the hour of trial that is coming upon the whole world, to test all who dwell upon the earth (Rev 3:10).
Summary
While there are many more last days' signs surrounding Israel that can be expanded upon, such as increasing Anti-Semitism globally, the alignment of the Ezekiel 38 nations that will come against Israel during the 7 year tribulation, etc… the main point to be understood is that if Christ is going to return to Israel at His 2nd coming, to save and redeem His people, Israel would obviously have to [1] be reborn as a nation to exist in the latter days and [2] we would obviously expect to see greater tensions surrounding around Israel, from increasing hatred of the Jewish people, to nations making war with them, and nations wanting to take or divide their land, as the Bible tells us will happen in the latter days. As these events are currently taking place, and all centered around Israel, one can only conclude that Israel is in fact God’s timepiece for the last days.
